The Spring Reset
a guide to feeling good
WE MADE IT TO SPRING!! The skies are lighter, the air is fresher, the mood is lifting. The heaviness of winter has left and it’s time to come out into the world again. I feel like a bear emerging from its hibernation as the snow starts to melt.
Spring is very much a time of clearing and renewal, which makes it the perfect time for a bit of a reset. It’s time to throw open the windows and truly dust off the cobwebs!!
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is linked to the liver, the organ responsible for the smooth flow of energy - known as Qi. This energy naturally rises and expands in spring. But when things become stagnant, it can show up as irritability, frustration, headaches and allergies.
Similarly, in Ayurveda, spring is associated with a build-up of heaviness from winter. This can result in mucus, congestion and sluggishness if not cleared out.
Both systems point to the same idea — this is the season to lighten things up.
More greens,
more fibre,
more movement,
and less of the heavy, stagnant habits that build up over winter.
Which, when you think about it, is exactly what the body is asking for.
Clean your space:
Open your windows — introduce fresh air and energy
Clean out your fridge — throw away any out-of-date foods
Declutter — sell or give away things you no longer need
Rotate your wardrobes — swap winter jumpers for summer tops
Reduce toxins — make one low-toxic swap to your beauty products
Wipe down your surfaces — try a natural cleaning recipe
Wash your bedding — air your duvet and pillows in the sun
Foods to focus on:
Spring naturally brings in lighter, more bitter, fibre-rich foods. Exactly what the body needs to support hormone balance and detoxification after winter.
Seasonal produce:
Asparagus (one of the best spring foods)
Spinach
Rocket
Watercress
Radish
Spring onion
Leek
Peas (fresh garden peas)
Broad beans
Artichoke
Also focus on:
Light, crunchy foods — include whole grains, vegetables, and spices
Increase fibre gradually — aim to build up to around 30g per day
Stay hydrated — add lemon, mint, or cucumber to your water for extra minerals
Herbal supports — try nettle and cleavers infusions
Support lymphatic flow — read my post here
Avoid:
Try to avoid heavy, greasy processed foods. Keep dairy, gluten, refined sugars and carbs to a minimum.
Practices to focus on:
Morning sunlight — support your energy and circadian rhythm (so much easier to achieve now)
Social media detox — unfollow anyone who doesn’t make you feel good
Support emotional flow through journalling — release anything that’s been weighing you down
Set intentions — get clear on your goals for the months ahead
Go foraging — nettle, cleavers, and wild garlic are all in season (i'm loving this recipe)
Counteract sluggishness — try a new workout class or movement practice
Spring is a natural time to detox. Start adding juices and teas to gently support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
Springtime cleansing juice:
2 stalks celery
5 sprigs parsley
2 stalks kale
2 stalks Swiss chard
1 beetroot
Small bunch spinach
1 apple
8 carrots
1 pinch ginger
Cleansing cleavers infusion:
Gather a large bag of cleavers (sticky weed), ideally from somewhere away from main paths and foot traffic
Remove any yellow or brown leaves
Add to a large pot and rinse well
Cover with cold water and leave to sit in the fridge overnight
Strain and sip throughout the day for a lymph-loving drink.
One final note of caution, it’s easy to rush straight back out into the world after what feels like a loooong winter. But go gently at first. It’s easy to do too much too soon.
Here’s to feeling good this Spring!
